Little Yara went to the specialist surgeon on Friday to have her badly infected eye removed. We’re grateful for all the love and well wishes sent for her surgery.
Sadly the surgery did not go ahead as planned. The specialist surgeon was unable to secure intravenous catheter access. After trying all four legs and both ears attempts were not successful due to skin folds and distortion of her legs. To continue with the surgery without the catheter access greatly increases her anaesthetic risk as there will be no access to administer emergency drugs, if needed.
The decision was therefore made that Yara would go home and another attempt will be made on Wednesday 19th August.
We are hopeful that if the catheter is in before pre anaesthetic medication her blood pressure will still be increased and the veins will be more welcoming. Yara will also have some blood pressure mediation prior to the attempt.
If a catheter cannot be placed, we will have no option but to go ahead with the surgery without vein access. This is not ideal at all, and increases the risk of her surgery massively. Yara’s eye is causing her a significant amount of pain; it has no blood supply; it’s badly infected and is dead; there is a build up of pressure to her eye. It has to be removed on a welfare basis, to leave her as she is is not an option. This is not an option we, nor the specialist have taken easily, but her surgery has to be done. So please, cross everything that Yara’s veins are welcoming and she can have the catheter so her surgery can go ahead without the added risk.
Good news however! The uveitis has improved in her remaining eye and her medications for this are now being decreased.
Yara is still having pain medication and was very happy to be home.
We are grateful for the vets for only charging us for the medication used and not for the additional care of Yara and room preparation used for the abandoned surgery. They have also applied a charity discount to their bill. Little things like this, which really are not that little, on top of the love and care they show Yara is massively appreciated.
So please everyone, keep everything crossed that Yara’s surgery goes ahead on Wednesday, safely and without further complication.

Please give a big BRNGB welcome to Yara
Yara is one of two sister who joined us at last weekend. Yara is currently under assessment and is not ready for her forever home; please do not make enquiries, as they will go unanswered at this time.
Yara is just over two years old, and the braver of the two sisters, but sadly has an infection in her eye, which means she has to have it removed.
As with Aggie. this lovely girl came to us from her original family, where she was basically a “free range” basset. She lived very rural and was rarely inside a home.
Yara is a very playful, happy girl and is enjoying being involved with a pack of bassets. She’s settled into foster life really well and is a confident player and mooching around on her own! Yara has definitely learnt what comfort is, as you’ll see from the photos below.
Yara does favour being outside, but is getting used to being in a house; she loves attention and belly rubs.
You’ll notice in the photos of both Yara and Aggie they have at least two leads on them when out. They are a flight risk never being walked on leads before, or going out in cars. Yara is definitely getting used to walks and doesn’t seem to mind the “equipment”.
Now, as you would have read about Aggie she has an eye issue. Sadly Yara’s is a lot more serious. Yara was taken to the vet early last week, and has already been seen by an eye specialist. As with Aggie, it is probable that Yara has had puppies.
Sadly Yara is totally blind in her left eye. This has been caused by an infection which has gone mainly untreated. Whilst waiting for the eye specialist Yara was prescribed eye drops, which she was a very good girl having.
So fast forward to the eye specialist. The appointment was for an hour so a multitude of tests could be carried out.
The specialist has advised that Yara’s left eye needs to be removed. There is no blood flow going to it, there is a deep infection in her eye which is causing her pain. Sadly, the infection has already started to spread to her right eye. Blood has been taken so we can understand what the infection is and hopefully the right antibiotics can be given and we can save her right eye. The results will be back on Monday.
Agatha will also be checked to ensure that the issue is not hereditary. Although looking at photos and after speaking to the specialist, this could have been an injury to her eye at some point in her past which the infection has managed to attack. Until we know for certain we are grasping at straws, but we will get to the bottom of it.
It is devasting that a hound so young has to go through this, and could potentially have both of her eyes removed.
As soon as we know what we are dealing with we will update you all further. We’ve added the vet notes below. So again, we are asking for funds to help more basset eyes! That’s three hounds, all needing eye surgery in our care.
To be so young and to go through is this just so devastating.
