It’s a subject that nobody really likes to discuss, but today it’s one we need to be open about. It’s a long post, but one that needs to be read.
Many of you see us fundraising throughout the year, giving you the chance to win everything from holidays to t-shirts, with plenty of wonderful prizes in between. You’ve also recently celebrated with us as we announced the fantastic amount raised through our annual Camp Basset.
Firstly, Camp Basset raised an incredible amount, and we are enormously grateful to every single person who supported it. However, it’s important to explain that a lot of that total has been received in payments since January 2026 when tickets went on sale (although a wonderful amount was raised over the weekend). While every donation has been invaluable, it wasn’t one large lump sum that suddenly transformed our finances this month.
Right now, we have three – and possibly four – bassets who need specialist eye surgery. You’ve already met Molly and Willow, and we’ll introduce the other ladies to you very soon. Trust us, we’re not hiding bassets, we’re juggling them.
Molly and Willow each have their own dedicated fundraisers, and your generosity has been overwhelming. But alongside them, we still have another 16 bassets in our care (not including Molly, Willow, Yara and Aggie) who rely on us for, in some cases, specialist food, medication, veterinary treatment and everything they need to live happy, healthy lives. Any funds raised from Molly and Willow’s fundraisers left over (if any), will go towards the other basset’s care
Last month alone, we had an outgoings of £6,152.24 on veterinary care, while donations received during July totalled £6,700.60 (A sample of invoices are below).
June was an expensive month with the hounds in our care; outgoings totalled an eyewatering £11,618.82 with donations of £6,593.17 coming in. We honestly cannot sustain too many months like June.
Looking at our fundraising announcements, it may sometimes seem as though we’re cash-rich and constantly asking for more. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re not squirrelling money away for a rainy day—we’re managing a cash flow that, at times, feels more like riding out a tsunami.
We will never knowingly turn our backs on a hound that needs us and that we have the ability to help. Sometimes saying “yes” means taking on a dog with complex medical needs, knowing the bills will come later. We don’t make those decisions with our heads alone—we make them with our hearts, because every basset deserves the chance to be loved, to be comfortable and to have a future.
We couldn’t do any of this without our incredible support network of adopters, fosterers, volunteers, fundraisers and donors.
As a registered charity, we don’t pay salaries, or expenses. We are simply three trustees, backed by an amazing army of volunteers and supporters, all working towards one goal: giving every basset that comes into our care the chance of a better life.
We also believe in being completely transparent. We want you to understand where your donations go and why we so often find ourselves asking for your help. Every appeal has a purpose. Every fundraiser has a hound behind it.
If you’ve ever wondered whether your donation makes a difference, the answer is simple: it does.
It pays for the operation that restores a dog’s sight. It buys the specialist food that eases an upset tummy. It covers the medication that keeps an elderly hound comfortable. It funds the emergency vet visit that can’t wait until tomorrow. Most importantly, it means that when the next frightened, neglected or unwanted basset needs us, we don’t have to ask whether we can afford to help—we can simply say, “come on in.”
