As you would have seen from recent posts, we do accept Basset crosses into our family to be fostered, assessed and then adopted as well as, of course, full Basset Hounds.

What you would have also seen is us struggling to rehome some of these beautiful hounds. We do understand why, you, our supporters are here to support the Basset Hound breed just as we are; and some of you are not wanting to share your hearts and homes with a Basset cross – again we totally get that and understand that. If you wanted “any” breed or a Heinz 57 dog you would be looking at any rescue/charity.

We have always prided ourselves on being transparent to our supporters, adopters, fosters and volunteers so this is why we are posting this.

Over the last few years it has become increasingly harder to re-home dogs, and this is across the board, not just our rescue, most rescues are in the same boat. Either it’s becoming harder or we are just getting busier because for whatever reason, more and more people are surrendering their dogs to charities across the country.

Historically we have always taken, in addition to full Bassets, Bassets who are cross breeds. We will still accept Basset crosses into our BRNGB family; and we know you, our supporters, will continue to support that. However, what we are now putting in place is an assessment of the cross Basset, and making enquiries within our foster team to ascertain whether we can place the cross Basset into a foster home and whether the cross Basset will have a happy ever after with us.

This is not us being “breed snobs” but in some cases, take Scout for example, she probably would have found her happy ever after with another rescue if we had known how little basset she actually is and helped find a more suitable rescue for her. We only want the best for all Hounds that we are contacted about.

Please do continue to contact us if you are thinking of rehoming your Basset cross and we will look to help you, and if we can’t help you we will help you find a rescue that can help you.

We are not afraid to reach out to other rescues for help with Basset crosses that we cannot place, this isn’t us “passing the buck” but us finding and using the best possible resources for the hounds that we do have in our care.

Here’s some of the beautiful mixed Basset Hounds we currently have in our care.  We are always thoughtful of Millie who had her puppies with us, Millie being a full Basset Hound….yet her babies look nothing like a basset so we don’t judge a book by it’s cover!

Do not be put off contacting us, but respect our decision regarding Basset cross Hounds so we can ensure every Hound gets the best option possible for them.
