We have been very quiet about Derek, this wasn’t intentional, however there is a very important reason.

Derek has proved to be a very complex little boy. Now we knew he had resource guarding issues and little triggers when he came to us.

He has moved foster once since he’s been with us, and has been with his current foster family since late last year.

We have had a Behaviourist work with Derek, we have had a session with a Vet Behaviourist. All of which has been imperative and incredibly useful to his foster family to help Derek work through his issues; help them to understand him and more importantly for him to understand the world he is in.

Derek is a hound that needs boundaries, but kind boundaries; he needs to know he can move away from an experience he finds uncomfortable; he needs to understand he has options, and help in making the right choices from the options he has, which is where the boundaries come in.

Since Derek has been on a pain management regime his behaviour has improved massively, obviously this comes with the support and care from his foster family.

Derek is hugely affectionate; when his behaviourist first met him, he was literally on her lap, laying on his back wanting cuddles and belly scratches. He will snuggle with his humans, he will play and interact wonderfully with the resident hounds. He really is just a loving hound. Until he feels threatened and this was as something as simple as getting him ready for a walk in the early days. In the early days he would snap, grumble and growl. All warnings that us humans need to accept as a “please leave me alone” we all have days like that right?

His fight reaction to things has definitely improved massively, to the point we will soon be looking for a very special forever home for Derek. There will be full support from us and his behaviourist to ensure his settling in period is successful, and multiple meet and greets before he goes to his new home so we know Derek is understood.

In all honesty, he’s not a bad boy, just needs to be understood. So please keep an eye out for his blog, especially if you are looking for a snuggly boy who needs his humans to understand him and keep him happy and safe.

Thank you to Derek’s two foster homes for helping this boy, and the experts who have been on hand so very much to help.

Some hounds need the phycological support rather than physical support and without your donations we would not have been able to help Derek in the way that we have.

Please welcome 5 year old Derek into the family.

Derek is under assessment and is not available to be adopted. Any enquiries regarding him will go unanswered.

Derek joined the BRNGB family yesterday, one of four hounds coming into our care this weekend.

He had been with his family since a puppy, we know they are devastated to see him go, but we also know that they made the right decision for Derek and their family.

We know that Derek can resource guard high value treats and likes to have a game of escape from collar so you have to chase me.

He settled into his foster home well; he was nervous when he heard some fireworks and sought comfort with a cuddle with his foster family.

We will update more on Derek’s journey as his assessment progresses.

If you would like to donate to Derek’s care the link to do so is below, as well as the link to this month’s raffle. He does not need a wish list at this time.

Thank you for your continued support, we know with Christmas around the corner, money is being spent elsewhere so any financial donation, shop order, share, like, words of support are gratefully received.
