27th April 2026

To celebrate Bertie’s 6th birthday on the 17th April he’s decided it’s time to find his forever home.

Please read his full blog. Bertie is the most amazing hound, but he has his quirks which will need a home that is totally “on the ball” with him.

Firstly food! Bertie is a walking dustbin on 4 legs. Push it to the back of the counter – it will be gone. Put it in a cupboard – it will be gone. Sit at a table to eat – chances are he will find a way for it to be gone. Push the patio door too so he can’t get in to the food – it will be opened and it will be gone!

Don’t underestimate this boy. However put him on a lead if you’re eating and tell him no and lay down consistently and he will. When eating, put him in the other room or in a crate and he will wait.

We are certain that with consistent, positive reinforcement he will understand and learn this is not acceptable, only his stomach thinks it is.

Secondly! Bertie is a strong lad. He’s not fat, but he’s a big boy and he will pull you like a steam train (apart from when he decides flat basseting is more fun). He needs to have his energy burnt out physically and mentally, and he needs consistent and on going positive reinforcement training when walking.

So if that hasn’t put you off, which we are sure it hasn’t, here’s all you need to know about Bertie before you apply:-

  • He does not refuse any food.
  • He must be fed separately to any other dogs, there’s no aggression but he will eat their food.
  • He uses a slow feeder bowl
  • He does not have any allergies
  • He loves raw veggies as treats
  • He currently sleeps in a crate next to the two resident hounds (Bertie’s previous owner crate trained him and that is where he slept when he was there)
  • He adores cuddles on the sofa and loves being close to you
  • He’s happy to get up onto the sofa, he can cope with steps, although is not allowed upstairs in his foster home
  • Happily jumps in the car
  • He has been left for short periods of time and prefers to be in the front room rather than a crate when being left alone with the resident hounds, but has only been left for 1/2 hour with free roam whilst in foster
  • He can be left alone in the crate for up to 4 hours, and will initially bark but settles with company of the resident hounds.
  • He is currently walked in a Halti harness and collar. With ongoing training we believe the Halti can be stopped in time.
  • He’s happy to meet other people and dogs when out walking
  • Is house trained and will go out when needed.
  • Happy to be around children but we would say secondary school age because of his bouncy ways and love of food
  • He’s a laid back boy, but will play quite boisterously when the mood takes him. He does need a resident dog, one that will match his playfulness
  • He gets worried when the resident hounds have a scuffle and will take himself off rather than join in
  • Prey drive is high in this boy, so no small furries, he wants to chase cats, foxes, squirrels.
  • No issues at the vet was happy to be examined.
  • Happy to have his ears cleaned.
  • He loves to play with a ball, tug rope with humans and dogs.
  • He loves a raised bed, or child’s trampoline to sleep on whilst in the garden!
  • Bertie must have a playful resident hound in his new home.

Bertie is the most loveable hound and will be a wonderful addition to your home, as long as you understand his love of food and how all boundaries with food will need consistent training in the early days.

He’s a very quick learner, and with time, patience, trust and positive reinforcement food and being strong on lead will be overcome.

His foster family will really, honestly miss him because he is a joy to be around. A loving, cuddly, big boy who is eager to please, who wants and needs his own home and play mate

So are you the home for Bertie to love and be loved? Honestly he is a wonderful, gentle, loving boy who just needs some basset savvy guidance.

If you think you are a match to Bertie we would love to hear from you.

Bertie was castrated before he came to BRNGB. His vaccinations were completed in January 2026. He’s had some dental work and his nails trimmed. He’s been given a full sign off by the vet.

Bertie’s needs

  • No to small furries
  • Children at secondary school age – Bertie is too bouncy for younger children
  • Someone who is home a lot of the time to help Bertie settle in
  • Not to be left for more than 4 hours at a time, and in the early days to build up to this gently
  • Bertie needs a resident, playful dog in the home.
  • A family who will involve Bertie in all their fun activities
  • A family who are willing to continue with Bertie’s training using only positive reinforcement methods. We will of course be on hand to give pointers and tips
  • A family who are active, Bertie loves and needs his walks as well as mental stimulation
  • Fred’s adoption fee is £300.00
  • Applications close at 8pm on Saturday 2nd May 2026

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Bertie is subject to an adoption fee of £300.00 and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including all dogs will need to be able to travel to his foster home to meet Bertie and his foster family.
  • You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Bertie’s foster family, so that all of his history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of his needs, demands and requirements.
  • Bertie comes with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.
  • Bertie, as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life

12th April 2026

Well Bertie…….the only Hound who managed to break through the barriers and get to the buffet at the Spring Fling. Was he ashamed? Was he sorry? Absolutely not! Was he proud with his stolen sandwiches? Totally!

We think he still bores his foster siblings with stories of his great break through, they’re just jealous the didn’t share his stolen wares.

Think the glory will be short lived, Bertie is off to the vets tomorrow tomorrow to have a little nap whilst his teeth are looked at and given a good scrub. They are quite nasty at the back, we’re hopeful there will be no extractions, so keep your fingers and toes crossed. Bertie however cannot cross his as he’s having a manicure whilst he’s there.

We’ve added his estimate below if you would like to donate, or you can buy a ticket for this months raffle, which ironically is for some amazing dental friendly treats donated by on of our foster parents and recently adopted Beryl. Link is also below.

Thank you so much for all of your support for the stunning boy Bertie.

22nd March 2026

Bertie has had a wonderful first 2 weeks in foster.

He wasn’t a fan of being left with his foster siblings on a night time and was waking everyone up in the early hours having a bark off with himself. This has started to settle with a little background noise and knowing that his family isn’t that far away.

He’s had his vet check and all is looking well for this stunning boy.

He’s a sun worshipper too, and loves nothing better than being laid out in the garden with his foster siblings. He’s also learning to share, the sofa, left over yoghurt spoons and a game of bity face!

Bertie is also going to grace us with his presence at our Spring Fling on the 28th March, this could be interesting with the buffet lunch and a pro counter surfer like him!

SPRING FLING March 28th 2026 – BRNGB

14th March 2026

Please give Bertie a big welcome! 🐾

Bertie joined us last weekend and turns 6 years old next month. He’s truly a big lad, and thanks to his previous owners he’s already had his weight brought down massively. As you can see, he’s now loving life playing with his resident foster siblings. ❤️

Bertie has been described as a bit clumsy, sometimes over-excited (and a little loud!), but deep down he firmly believes he’s a lap dog… and if he fits, he sits! 🐶

He’s happy around older children, though he’s not quite as confident with the little ones, and has a lack of personal space awareness.

After just one week in foster, he’s proving to be a very good lad. He’s not too keen on being left alone or settling at night, but he does enjoy having the radio on for company, which helps him relax.

Bertie also has a mischievous side — he’s a bin raider and would absolutely be a countertop surfer if given the chance! 😅

His back teeth need a little attention, and he’ll be having his vet check-up this coming week.

He’s already proving to be a very special boy, and we’re so happy to have him with us. 💙

Bertie doesn’t need a wish list right now, but if you’d like to support him you can donate to his fund using the link below, or buy a raffle ticket for our amazing dog & human hamper for £5.00 — link also below.

Welcome, Bertie! 🐾
