It’s been a little while since our last update on Sophie. Since our last update, Sophie has moved to a quieter foster home with just one other hound, and she has come on tremendously. She is full of character and has become very well loved by everyone who meets her.
Sophie is still a very stubborn basset and she is also a very typical adolescent puppy. She loves to push boundaries and will get into mischief. Sophie can become destructive when she is bored, she is also a chewer and will chew TV remotes, shoes, you leave it in Sophie’s reach, it’s now Sophies! However, she’s a very good girl, and has shown no resource guarding concerns so can have long lasting chews like yak chews. We are confident she will grow out of these behaviours with positive reinforcement training and is already improving.
Sophie is an incredibly quick learner. It quickly became apparent in foster that Sophie actually knows a number of commands, including sit and down she just didn’t care for them! Her forever family will need to be prepared to continue her training with patience and plenty of positive reinforcement.
Sophie has shown signs of a food intolerance and has a very sensitive tummy. She is currently doing well on Advanced Nutrition, Optimum Health Sensitive Skin and Tummy, which appears to suit her. However, she can flare up unexpectedly with certain treats, so her forever family will need to be mindful about what she is given. When her stomach flares up her ears do get itchy but with regular cleaning they have caused no issues.
Like many adolescent hounds, Sophie can be a defiant when it comes to house rules. Her house training has improved massively, and she has now started asking to be let outside and will toilet outdoors when asked. However, if she thinks she can get away with it, she will toilet in the house. Her forever family must expect to continue with the housetraining and anticipate that she might regress with this.
Sophie currently sleeps overnight in a crate and sleeps soundly, snoring away from 10pm ish to 7am ish. She is a heavy sleeper and has no interest in getting up before 7am. With a suitably Sophie-proofed room, she could potentially have more freedom in the future.
Sophie is not confident with stairs, so her new home will need to be one where she does not need to regularly use them. Her adopters should not plan for her to have access to upstairs. She also does not like being picked up but will let you lift her into the car. She does also jump into the car footwell then onto the seats. She can be a bit whiny in the car but does eventually settle.
Despite being full of beans in the house, Sophie is unimpressed by walks and would quite happily skip them altogether. Once she’s persuade to leave the house she walks beautifully and has clearly had some good training. She does walk at a rather leisurely pace and is very happy to stop and say hello to anyone who asks. Sophie has limited recall outside the house and this will need improving on.
Sophie has shown no signs of reactivity while out and about, although she is naturally interested in other dogs.
Sophie is incredibly playful and can sometimes push the boundaries with her foster sibling. For this reason, we feel she would be best suited to a home with another playful, confident dog who can appropriately tell her when enough is enough.
Sophie has been left alone for 1–2 hours and has shown no signs of separation anxiety. She is happy to settle in the house with her resident hound while the humans are out.
Sophie is not ready yet for her forever home, this is just a snippet of what her future needs (currently) are.
She really is a lovely girl and when she is ready we will be looking for her forever home.

Please welcome 10 month old Sophie into the family. Please note, as always Sophie is under assessment and is not ready to be adopted, any enquiries regarding Sophie will not be answered at this time.
Sophie’s family contacted us on Friday to ask for help. Unfortunately, a change in their circumstances meant they were no longer able to give a busy 10-month-old puppy the time and care she deserves. Wanting the best for Sophie, they made the heart-breaking decision to ask us to help.
Sophie is a lovely little girl, but we totally understand, knowing the circumstances, why Sophie and her family needed our help.
She’s a big girl for her age; now we know Bassets have selective hearing and are stubborn, but this young girl takes it to the extreme. She totally ignores any attempt to get her attention, she (if she actually does hear the words) thinks “no”, “Sophie”, “leave” “down” is white noise, ignores any form of treat regardless of his value; when she does decide to come to you, it’s on a pogo stick and land shark (puppy) teeth, all whilst trying to climb out of the downstairs window.
She’s a large ball of energy, there’s no malice, but overwhelming excitement, stubbornness, lack of boundaries, attention seeking little diva!
Now she will be going to the vets in the coming days; we know from her previous owners she has very gunky ears (as you can see) and she does have a kink in her tail, possibly an old break (which can be common from when little ones are born and stepped on by mum). All will be investigated in due course.
Sophie doesn’t need a wish list, however if you would like to donate to her care, you can do by following the link below, or making a payment to Paypal [email protected] or the bank A/C 52372266 S/C 40-34-27.
