Meet Frank and Delilah
Please note that the photos and story of these two hounds are heartbreaking, but needs to be told.
This is a case of pure neglect and these hounds are in serious need of care and medical attention.
Frank is 8 years old and Delilah is a couple of years younger at 6 years old.
We were contacted by a Basset lover and asked if we could help these two hounds. They had adopted them from a “rescue” where we believe the hounds had been since January. It is clear that no medical treatment had been sought for these hounds, either by the previous owner who left them at the “rescue” or the “rescue” themselves. From what we have seen this is not a rescue and not a registered charity and the hounds were left to free roam, in what we perceive to be a very dangerous, unsanitary environment. We understand that various authorities are aware of this “rescue” as such we will not be commenting on this further publicly. They are not a breed specific rescue.
The basset lover contacted us because upon seeing the vet it became apparent that these hounds needed a lot of treatment. This was blatantly obvious when they went to see the bassets and they adopted them to ensure they were safe.
They were correct in that they do need a lot of care and treatment.
Both hounds require treatment for their ears, both need urgent dental treatment including extractions. Both are suffering with skin infections which immediate treatment has commenced as well as treatment for their ears and eyes.
Frank will need at least both eyes operated on due to bi-lateral entropion. Delilah may well also need surgery on one of her eyes also because of entropion.
Delilah is also passing a huge amount of blood in her urine; samples have been tested and she has started an emergency course of antibiotics. There is a fear that there has been serious damage to her kidneys. Further investigations will be required once this cycle of antibiotics have finished.
Both also require spaying/neutering.
Apart from the above, what was glaring obvious upon meeting the bassets was the fact that Frank’s testicles were and are dragging the ground. He literally stands, sits, lays on them. When he toilets he is covering them. The skin is paper thin, seriously infected and will split and bleed if knocked. Frank cannot have any surgery until the infection on his skin has cleared up. Cream has been prescribed and is being applied onto his testicles. Once operated on the surgeon should be able to advise whether there is any tumour.
These are probably some of the most heart breaking bassets we have had surrendered to us.
If you met them however, you would not believe the horror they have lived through since at least January (clearly all the above has not happened since January, but no treatment or help has been sought by the “rescue”). They are such a cute couple, very much bonded, love people and other dogs. Even enjoyed going to see the vet!
Please do look at the photos, as heartbreaking as they are. These Hounds are going to need an Army behind them, and we know you will support us in helping them get fit and well. They deserve every bit of happiness and love, and they are lapping this up.
We will be fund raising, and they will need a wish list, but in the meantime if you could donate to their care the link is below to do so or you can make a payment via Paypal – [email protected].
The estimates for their treatment are below.
As their treatment progresses we suspect their needs also will sadly.
