Treacle is the type of Basset that makes your heart swell and head shake (often at the same time!), and re-confirms why so many love the personalities and traits of the breed.

Treacle will be perfectly suited to a very experienced basset family, in particular the stubborn, grumpy, stropping personality traits they can have.

Treacle is getting older, and while this doesn’t stop her being active, wanting to play and have fun, it does mean her tolerance of being asked to do something when she doesn’t particularly want too, or she is sleeping and very comfy can be limited.

This is why an understanding of what this can be like is needed; Treacle needs to be given time to come around to the idea of what you are asking her to do and she will do it, she may just make take a few minutes longer than you have planned or thought, while she decides that yes she will carry out your request. If you try to get her to do it quickly or without positive motivation she can get grumpy.

Do not let Treacle’s age put you off, Treacle is testament to the saying ‘age is but a number’. This girl is fun, active, and loves nothing more than playing with bitey face (or butt nudging) with her foster brother and sister or playing with her numerous toys and occasionally zoomies.

Treacle lives with cats here, and is good with them, she will bark at one, but this is only because he is grumpy and will hit and hiss at her every time she is close by, she is just making sure he knows she won’t take his nonsense.

Treacle will keep you to a very clear routine, and if you think you can deviate without prior consultation and acceptance of your request by Treacle, you will get a very loud and clear telling off. Treacle likes her breakfast around 8am, a midday light snack, and her dinner by 6pm, be prepared for a 20-minute warning for dinner just in case you forget! Treacle is fed in the same room as our 2, but we always make sure there is a safe space between them all, because of ours, not Treacle.

Treacle sleeps downstairs as she cannot do stairs and settles down all night, no issues, on her own. She does like to be settled down for the night, with a cuddle and wrapped in her fleeces, you know she is happy to settle when she lays her head down. Now the darker mornings are in, Treacle doesn’t bother moving from bed when we come downstairs, instead expects you to come to her for a cuddle before she has a lazy stretch and decides to go out for a wee.

Treacle is house trained and will let you know when she wants out. Like many Bassets, when it is raining or colder, she will try and chance her arm not to go out, but she does listen and will begrudgingly go out with a side eye glare as she passes. We had a couple of accidents in Treacle’s first few nights here, and then on 2 other occasions where one of us had been away overnight on the first night as if the change to the norm unsettled her, but only the 1st night either of us were away.

Treacle enjoys a walk, and her fitness is improving greatly, she likes a gentle meander and sniff, nothing too strenuous. She can be a bit stiff when waking up, and initially moving about but there is nothing of concern, this is one of the few things that remind you she is 9. She does get excited for walks and can become naughty (cheeky naughty) and show off is she doesn’t have her daily walk, but even a quick one is enough to help with this, on the flip side if she isn’t feeling a walk that day, she will let you know too, by just stopping and refusing to move until you head back home.

Any person, or dog we have met, either in the house, out walking, at the vets etc. Treacle has been fantastic with, she is gentle, tail wagging and reads the signs very well. Everyone who meets Treacle love her. When you come home, she will meet you with a waggy tail, a very loud ‘arrrooooo’ and

must bring you a toy (not to touch, your hand is required for the butt she will have reversed into you for a scratch!).

We have left Treacle at home with ours for 4 hours and no issues. She will travel in car very well also.

She absolutely loves a fuss, her neck or tummy being scratched and cuddling up on the sofa next to you (again she will politely inform you when she believes you should be sitting down with her in the evening).

Now for her Basset naughty bits…. Treacle is a master at stealing Amazon parcels and ripping them open (regardless of what has been delivered), she believes all shopping bags that come into the house may have something she would like in them (whether it is for her or not) and she will blatantly help herself to what she fancies and run away with it to play with/chew etc. Do not think putting things on the stairs a few up will stop her, she will get it. She will also master the treat cupboard very quickly and help herself if you don’t have eyes on her, she is a ninja thief master!

Everything is done at Treacle’s own pace, and in a way that while you may have suggested it, that it is clear Treacle is doing it because she decided too, not because you asked her too. This means getting off the sofa, evening wees etc. is at snail’s pace, with the most amount of side eye, stretching she can put in before she agrees.

Treacle is very particular about her treats and will refuse those that do not meet her standards, she also believes that if she wants a throw or cushion and you are using it well that is not her problem and will take it off you.

A be aware of for Treacle is when she is sleeping, or comfy she does not like to share her space with other pets. We have had a few grumbles at the other dogs and cats if they get too close. I do think this is because she does get stiff and probably a little sore, since Treacle has been here, we have just given a stern no when she has grumbled, and some time for her to come around, no moving her etc.

She can also be very stroppy if she feels hard done by any other family dogs, and will shout at them, like don’t you dare do that to me (she will also squeal like she is being killed if they get too rough when playing). She will then sulk for a while just to ensure everyone in the house is clear she is not happy and to maximise the dramatic effect.

Whoever gets to be adopted by Treacle (and yes it is you getting adopted by Treacle) are going to be very lucky. She is adorable who we would be happily keeping if it weren’t for the other hounds, we know will need our foster space.

You may recall when Treacle came into our care she was passing blood from her bottom due to a Polyp, this has been signed off from the vet and a clean bill of health has been given.

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Treacle is subject to an adoption fee and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including dogs will need to be able to travel to her foster home to meet her and her foster family.

You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Treacle’s foster family, so that all of her history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of her needs, demands and requirements.

Treacle comes with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.

Treacle as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life.
