Age: 2 years

Location: West Yorkshire

Sex: Neutered Male

Meet Cooper, a very energetic, cheeking, loving, Basset x Daxi.

Please ensure you read all of Cooper’s blog before applying, he has very specific needs; once these needs are met he will give back to you tenfold.

Cooper can be nervous of new people, which can be displayed as aggression. He’s not bitten, but can appear a bit scary. Once you have gained his trust, he is a total love bug! AS such we feel that there will be a few meet and greets with Cooper’s new family before he can go off home with them happily. He needs to develop relationships on his terms not the other way round. It is imperative that Cooper gains your trust, not the other way around. He is young and still learning so you must be able to accept this, be firm, but kind, and wait for Cooper to respond to you.

Cooper’s amazing points

He is a loving young man, and is so very very affectionate once he knows he can trust you.

He is full of energy and will play for as long as he is allowed. He loves to play tug of war with the resident foster hounds and there is nothing better in Cooper’s world than a game of chase.

He is very handsome and is very cute to look at.

Cooper really really enjoys his walks, he does get every excited when it’s time to get his harness on and thinks this is a game even before leaving the house.

Cooper is house trained and will let you know if he needs to go outside; he also likes to let you know if the water bowl is low, if it’s food time or that he needs a treat, you will become his servant.

Cooper’s traits

He is very much a Daxi, who loves to launch his toys across the room, in the air without any warning!

Being part Daxi he does love the sound of his own voice he uses his bark for several for several reasons, and you will get to know which one is which.

When sleeping he does like the air to circulate around his nether regions (legs a cimbo)

He does love it when you get home after being out. Protection is best worn as the term in coming at you does apply, between his whip like tail, kisses, and nose/head butts what more do you need when returning home after a hard days work? Cuddles and more kisses to follow, and maybe just maybe a well aimed nose. As we said Cooper is very energetic!

Like most hounds Cooper will find any food left in his reach, oh and yes he loves his grub and will scoff the lot!

Cooper’s personality

Although Cooper is part Basset, he is very much a Dachund, he has to be the centre of attention. He doesn’t like to share toys, he kills soft toys looking for the squeaker and needs heavy chew toys, or they will be gone in minutes!

Cooper likes to bark at birds, deliveries, vans, anything on the otherside of the garden fence, people outside and pretty much anything that takes his fancy. You need to be prepared to work with this. He does however make a fabulous doorbell!

Cooper’s training

Cooper has been undergoing training with a qualified trainer whilst in foster and this will need to be continued. We will of course support Cooper’s new family with the ongoing training and we will provide the reports from his trainer. Any training needs to be positive reinforcement methods. His current trainer will be more than happy to speak with you as well.

Cooper’s main issue is when out walking he can show his fear reactiveness to people and vehicles. He is a strong lad so needs to be walked in a halti style head collar lead. He does show signs of when he is going to react and can be redirected; he is improving with his training and his new family will be able to see the signs to help him continue with his improvements.

Cooper does become locked in on when he’s on a mission and this is very difficult to regain his focus, it can be done but sometimes it is about finding which one works at that particular moment, treats, bouncing ball, something that squeaks these all have worked for us but not every time he really is a work in progress and is improving massively.

Cooper wouldn’t suit a home with young children, small/any furries or birds

Cooper needs to learn about sleeping downstairs if that is what you want, currently sleeps in our bed, yes under the duvet cuddled into you like your very own hot water bottle just Daxi shaped, basset sized and fidgety

What Cooper needs in his home

We believe if he could choose his own home, it would be somewhere he could be loved as much as he would love you.

Children he could live with, if they were 12 years old, they would have to be dog savvy, be prepared for Cooper’s welcome home, and would not be able to walk him due to his strength.

He would love a garden big enough to run in and somewhere to play and roll around

A home with nice food, and a high-bed if possible, and maybe a fun loving dog maybe with some energy to burn.

Cooper’s perfect owner

This is the big one for us, they would need maybe some Daxi experience as this will help, as you will understand him easier.

You will need lots of love, energy, patience and time to help this little fella to grow into super Cooper, we do believe that what you put into cooper will come back 10 fold,

Cooper would also need someone to be around more often than not as he does show signs of separation anxiety

Do you tick Cooper’s boxes?

If so we would love to hear from you if you fit his criteria

Cooper needs someone who is at home more often than not and prepared to put in the time to help him settle

  • Someone who is willing to work with Cooper in building a relationship and trust and be patient whilst he gets to know you and his new home
  • Cooper would be happy with an energetic resident dog, or as an only dog.  No small furries or birds.
  • We believe Cooper can live with dog savvy children over 12 years old.
  • Patience and time to spend with Cooper in the crucial first few weeks as he adapts.
  • Someone who is willing to continue with Cooper’s positive reinforcement training, which we will be happy to assist with.
  • Someone with Daxi knowledge
  • Someone who understands that Cooper is not a plug and play basset, he is a cross, and he is full of life
  • Someone who understands all of Cooper’s demands.

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Cooper is subject to an adoption fee and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including dogs will need to be able to travel to his foster home to meet him and his foster family.  We beleive Cooper will need multiple meet and greets to gain trust with you.

You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Cooper’s foster family, so that all of his history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of his needs, demands and requirements.

Cooper comes with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.

Cooper as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life.
