Bernard is a fun 1 year old basset (he will be 2 in January 2026).

Bernard came to us in February 2025, already neutered. 

Bernard is still very much a puppy and a work in progress. He learns fast and really does want to please; He needs someone who can work with him, using positive reinforcement training and he needs to be kept busy.

When you go out, he has to be in a crate when you go out or he will destroy the house. Anything you leave in the crate ie blankets, they will be fair game to his shredding machine!

Bernard’s favourite prey is plastic plant pots; he hunts them down; he will kill them; and he will bring them to you to show off his find! Any soft toys are also fair game and will come to a fluffy demise. Oh and any lead or harness left in the vicinity of his chops will get chomped.

Bernard settles well in his crate with another dog near by. He can be left for 4-5 hours. He sleeps the whole time you’re out.

He is a very strong walker. Currently he is walked in a halti which has helped with training to stop him pulling. Whoever has the joy in adopting this cheeky hound will need to be prepared to continue working with his walking.

Bernard has a very high prey drive, not just for plant pots but for cats and birds too. He stalks birds in the garden and will chase the cats off happily.

Bernard is currently in foster with a pack of bassets. One is totally blind. He is very gentle with her and will play with the other hounds. When he gets too much and they’ve had enough of his boundless energy they will give him a firm but polite warning, which he adheres to and will back off.

Bernard needs a confident, playful hound in his new home. Hounds can teach other hounds more than us humans so the resident hound needs to be able to be firm but polite and help Bernard understand where us humans can’t.

Bernard will be food possessive with other dogs, although humans he has not shown this at all. The dogs will need to be fed separately.

Bernard does get very excited and will jump up. Again this is a work in progress; because of this we are saying no children in the new home as we wouldn’t want him to be knocking anyone over. This jumping up includes meeting people outside the house as well.

Bernard is cute, don’t let any of the above put you off. He has no nastiness in him at all. He just needs guidance and love.

Bernard’s perfect home would be with someone who is home most of the time, someone who understands he is pretty much a clean canvas waiting for a human to help him colour in his life. Someone who can help him navigate growing up to be the brilliant lad we know he can be.

He loves his walks, and will go along for hours. He’ll be happy to explore with you.

Bernard does not have any food allergies and will happily eat anything. He’s currently fed Arden Grange food. Any long lasting treats he is given in his crate as well as his meals. He knows his crate is his space and goes into this without any fuss.

Bernard travels well and will go up a ramp into the car.

Bernard is clean in the house and will let you know when he needs to go out.

Bernard has not had any issues with visits to the vets, and enjoyed a visit to the groomers. He’s shown no reactions to fireworks or loud noises.

Now if the above hasn’t warmed your heart to Bernard, this will. One of the resident hounds had a seizure. Bernard was amazing, barking to alert his foster mum of what was going on. It wasn’t his normal bark, he knew he needed help and knew how to get it! Such a clever boy.

All in all Bernard is basically a puppy; he needs firm, fair, consistent, positive guidance to grow up.

• New human’s must be able to continue to work with Benard’s puppy ways in a positive and consistent manner
• No small furries including cats
• No small children
• An active family
• Someone who is home a lot in the early days whilst he settles in
• Not to be left for more than 4 hours at a time
• Can live with other resident dogs who are confident and fair
• Someone who has taken note of all of Bernard’s puppy traits, understands he is a clean canvas, and is willing to work with him.

Bernard’s adoption fee is £375.00

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Bernard is subject to an adoption fees and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including dogs will need to be able to travel to his foster home to meet him and his foster family.

You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Bernard’s foster family, so that all of their history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of their needs, demands and requirements.

Bernard will come with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.

Bernard, as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life.
