Age:- 10
Location:- Cleveland
Sex – Male
Even at 10 years old Barry is the Peter Pan of Bassets, full or energy and life!
He came into foster with us in August as an entire male who loved to escape his home. since neutering, his love to escape has dwindled.
Here’s what his foster family have to say about him:-
BARRY’S PERSONALITY
Loving; active; mischievous; food obsessed; food thief; bin explorer; very human focussed; stranger dog mildly tolerant; walker extraordinaire,; ball/toy lover; hoover & mower complainant; firework hater; and night-time garden wees & poos avoider!
He will tolerate other dogs, on walks but will give a warning growl if he doesn’t want to be bothered or they get too close. He is in foster with other resident hounds and is happy to play on his terms.
LIKES
Food of any kind, even those he should not have! Be prepared to keep worktops clear, cupboards securly shut and bins out of reach! Treats of any kind are his thing; he craves loves and cuddles; playtime with his humans with balls or any toys; being with his family; car rides, he will try to climb about unless he is secured, and loves to have the window open!; walks of any length, the longer the better; attention from human strangers; exploring where he knows he shouldn’t; and he loves to talk…sounds like he is growling but is not at all, just Barry having a chatter.
When people come into the house he will stand next to them barking until he gets a fuss and a belly rub.
He has been fine around children whilst in foster, but wasn’t overly keen on young children in his original home. This needs to be considered when applying if you have young children as we are only considering households with children over 12 years old.
DISLIKES
Fireworks he will try to find a safe place or climb onto your chest for safety & reassurance. With reassurance and calm attention he does settle.
He is not happy to go in the garden in the dark on his own and the foster family have had to keep a lamp on through the night.
He can be territorial with his space on the sofa and bed as has issues with being moved. Any family will need to deal with this with positive reinforcement and continued work. The worst Barry has done in foster is growl and grumble about being moved, however he will happily get off the sofa or move when offered a treat and the word “biscuit”. Please do consider his grumbling and how this will be dealt with within the home when applying.
He will go out for his bedtime wees with the offer of a biscuit as well.
FOOD
He eats at 8am & 5pm and has had a variety of dried food with no issues. He likes his dinner covered in warm water and any additional treats are always appreciated. He is very food focussed and has learnt about different foods since being in foster…carrots, cucumber, yohurt, eggs, chicken wings etc.
His foster family use a few pieces of his dog food to move him rather than have him react with growl or bark.
He is currently fed on Wagg adult chicken or Aldi chicken & veg complete foods. A variety of his regular treats will be sent on with new family.
SLEEPING
He sleeps upstairs either on the bed with his foster parents or the doughnut dog bed on the floor He has a treat given in the room before bedtime and sleeps really well and all night most of the time. Through the day he sleeps on the sofa but he has free run of the house so will sleep where he feels most comfortable and happy
LEAVING ALONE
It was told that he used to smash his head against things to escape however his foster family have never seen this and he has never shown signs of escape from house or garden since he was neutered.
He does have separation anxiety and will try destroying things to alleviate this however if walked prior to being alone and left with a treat, his foster family use raw beef bones from the butchers he has no issues, just ensure all tops, bins and bags are out of reach!
Since neutering his attempts to escape have stopped, however to be sure your garden and home will have to be completely secure and basset proof as during his settling period Barry may attempt to escape.
Ultimately, Barry is a goif ball that loves to play with a tennis ball or any toy he has.
He would like a family with just one other dog or no dogs.
If he is the only dog in the home the family need to be there most of the time. He travels well in the boot but if in back seat will climb across to passenger side or remain in the back but will try to get the window down as he loves the air.
What Barry is looking for:-

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Barry is subject to an adoption fee and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including dogs will need to be able to travel to his foster home to meet him and his foster family.
You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Barry’s foster family, so that all of his history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of his needs and requirements.
Barry comes with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.
Barry as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life.
