Poor boy Stanley really does need us right now.

He arrived with us at the beginning of August, as you can see from the photo, rather plump, although he is a very long basset with the plumpness.  It was warm and muggy when Stanley arrived at foster and pretty much immediately it was noted that he was drinking an awful lot.  He was panting heavily on short walks and just didn’t seem comfortable.

His claws were really long, and his appetite was incredibly picky!

Quickly after arriving he was off the vets to have his claws trimmed under sedation, we had been informed he does not like his claws being done, so forewarned is forepawed!

A urine sample was taken to this vet visit, he was drinking that much his urine was as clear as the water he was lapping up.  Blood tests were carried out and this showed potential issues with his kidneys and pancreas, possible Cushings disease.  This added to his size started to tick all the boxes for this disease.

His anal glands were also seriously compacted so they had a good empty.

Stanley loves having a butcher knuckle bone, helps with his diet, his teeth and of course mental stimulation. When he wasn’t having a good gnaw he was having frequent short walks throughout the day.  When none of this was going on he likes nothing better than a good nap, where his snoring is stratospheric.

We also knew that Stanley had a fall with his previous owners and had a noticeable limp on his front leg, he would also trip over it at times.  Sadly arthritis has set in on this leg.  All the more reason to keep trying to get weight off this boy.

After surveying his water intake, a huge 4.5 litres in 24 hours it was decided further tests were definitely required.

Fast forward through days of exploring the moors, the beach, bones, naps, making friends with all he meets including the cat, his test results come back showing high cortisol levels.  A final test under sedation, and an X-Ray on his front leg was booked.

The X-ray showed that he has very severe and gnarly arthritis in his front leg, loxicom will be his friends for the foreseeable.  It looks like there was a historical fracture; all that can be done here is managing the pain and keeping as much weight off as possible.

It was also confirmed that Stanley does have Cushings.  So  now we investigate the drugs that are required, the level of drugs, the best diet and how to manage this disease so Stanley can live out his best life for the rest of his life.

With all the tests Stanley has not only made a dent in our hearts but in the bank balance, around £2000.  Monthly drugs for him are going to be in the region of £250.00.  As Stanley is not ready to be adopted we will make sure he gets everything he needs throughout the rest of his assessment.

Regardless of all of the above, Stanley remains Stanley.  Stubborn, funny, cuddly, cheeky, playful, inquisitive and most of all the most loving boy going.

Enjoy his photos, he’s such a stunning boy! Thank you to everyone who has supported Stanley so far, especially his foster family for spending so much time and effort in helping the boy get fit.

10th August 2025

Please welcome 7 year old Stanley into the BRNGB family.

Stanley joined us this weekend and was an absolute star on his transport run.  Stanley is under assessment and is not available for adoption. Any enquiries regarding him will go unanswered.

Stanley has been described by his original family as very loving, happy to be around people and other dogs, which so far he is proving to be him to a tee!

He does have some mobility issues with one of his front legs.  He certainly needs to shed some pounds which will of course help his legs.

He’s a big lad, in size and in weight!  Boot camp has already started gently!

Stanley doesn’t need a wish list, however if you would like to donate to his care the link to do so is below.

Thank you to his transport team, all of who fell in love with this wonderful lad.
