Ethel’s further urine test has come back quite positive.  The concentration has gone down, it’s still not perfect but levels are going in the right way.  Ph levels still need to come down a little bit too; the best result however is that there were no crystals or blood to be seen so the special diet is doing what it’s supposed to do.  Another urine test in a month and maybe one after another 3 months then it can be decided whether she has to stay on the specialist diet or not.  Ethel’s hoping not as she’s not a fan!

Ethel continues to be a funny, happy girl.  She loves to run and play with her friends at the freedom field.  Secure walks are more like runs for her.  She’ll run off but never out of sight, stop and wait for you, then run off again, on lead she’s a good girl and mooches along at a good pace.

Ethel has managed to win over her foster family, and we are delighted to announce that they have now adopted Ethel.  She has found her forever home and is looking forward to going on her first holiday with them very soon.

Huge thank you to Ethel’s supporters, well wishers, donators and transport team who have all played a part in getting her to where she is today.  A healthy girl, who arrived very happy and continues to be a joy to be around.  We will of course keep in contact with her family regarding the further tests and offer any support required.

Congratulations Ethel!

11th August 2024

Well the lovely Ethel has been with us 4 weeks now and what a stunning girl she is!

She still continues to love everyone and everything we meet.  She’s so funny when she decide’s it’s dinner time or bed time, she will seek you out, and stand stamping her feet and give a bark or two to show her distain at the lack of time keeping.

The food seems to be working well with her, she is weeing a lot more and it is a lot clearer, she will be having a further urine test at the end of the month to ensure that all is well.

Ethel had her dental on Friday, thankfully only one tooth was removed, but just look at how amazing her teeth now look.  She’s so much happier and will crunch through her biscuits with a lot more ease.

Her dental cost £634.90, we’ve attached a copy of the inovice togther with the before and after photos.

It feels like Ethel has been with her foster family forever, she’s literally just arrived and slotted right in taking over the sofa!

28th July 2024

Ethel arrived 2 weeks and 1 day ago, and is the most wonderful girl.  She loves everyone and everything she meets, and greets all with a wonderful tail wag and a butt wiggle.

She has such a happy, captivating soul, if she is in your presence then you can’t do anything but smile at her.

Her favorite things are food, snuggles on the sofa, walks in the woods and meeting her new friends at a freedom field to have a good run around and play. Such an amazing well balance nature which is a true reflection on her previous owner who made the heartbreaking decision to surrender Ethel.

When Ethel arrived she was having trouble with her urine, she was passing a lot of blood, she went immediately to the vets for a check up and had antibiotics for 5 days as well as an anti-inflamatory to return in a week with a further sample.

The antibiotics certainly helped, but her urine was still very dark (as you will see below) so blood tests and urine tests were undertaken.  The results are that Ethel, thankfully was showing no signs of any organ damage; no infection; but her urine had a lot of crystals present.  This can cause blood as they can cause inflamation in the bladder, causing damage to the lining which results in the blood.  It would also be painful when urinating.  This would explain why Ethel had blood present, and why she doesn’t like to wee too much.  Left untreated, this could cause bladder stones which can only be removed by surgery.

So how do we help Ethel?

Her water intake has been upped, when ever she has her breakfast or dinner, it resembles soup so she is getting plenty of water, which results in her needing to wee more, which will help break down and pass the crystals.

She has been put on a specialist food, Royal Canine Urinary Food which we have purchased on line, via Pet Driugs On Line rather than via the vets to save some money.  A bag should last her about a month and costs around £90.00.  We’re hoping that once the crystals have broken down she can go onto a lower grade Urine specialist food, but if that’s what she needs thats what she’ll have.  She’s not too impressed with the idea of this diet!  We’re introducing other foods that won’t effect the crystals, such as fruit and vegetables.  The main issue with urine crystals is protein so we need to be careful what she has.  The fruit and vegestables, aren’t a favorite at the moment, although water melon is the best of a bad offering!

Ethel has also been booked into the vets for a dental in a couple of weeks time as her teeth are a little yucky.  This of course happens with age and can be expected.  Her ears are a lot cleaner and less smelly now as well with regular cleaning.

With the vet bills, food, tests and the estiamte for her dental, Ethel bills are just over £1,300.00, so far.  Further urine tests will be needed in about a month to see how the food is working for her.

She’s worth every penny as you will see from the photos below.

14th July 2024

Please give a warm BRNGB welcome to Ethel, the third hound who arrived into the family yesterday, hound number 650!!! That’s a lot of hounds in just under 11 years.

Ethel is under assessment at present, she is not avaliable for adoption and any applications for her will go unanswered.

Ethel is 9 years old, 10 early next year and is proving to be a wonderful girl.  She’s very happy, loves to be as close to you as possible, loves her food and her walks.  She’s happy to get in the car to be off on an adventure, even if that adventure means meeting horses and wallowing in some mud!

Ethel has already been to the vets, as upon arrival it was apparent that she had blood in her urine.  She has a course of antibiotics and will be back at the vets in the week for a further check up.

She has lump which will need checking and her ears and teeth need a clean.

None of this is stopping her being a funny little girl, she’s just so happy and cuddly.  A bit of a couch potato, the couch she has already claimed as her own!

Ethel does need a few bits and pieces to help her.  Her list is below.  The treats and finger bobbies will help, we hope, get some of the plaque off her teeth.  The mats will give her somewhere in the house to wee if she doesn’t make it outside whilst she’s suffering with her UTI, foster mum is a dab hand with the mop though so no harm done!

If the list is empty then Ethel’s wishes have come true.  If you’d rather donate to her care there is a link below for donations as well.

Massive thank you to Ethel’s transport team who collected Ethel with compassion and care, she really is one which they wanted to take home.
