We are so pleased to announce that Dougal and Dolly have gone to their forever home.

They have had an amazing first couple of days settling in, having some short walks to introduce themselves to the neighbourhood.  Dolly especially has enjoyed herself watching the world go by through the garden gate and greeting anyone who dares to walk past.

They are now living in a village where they are 2 of 5 bassets!  We are sure they will have lots of play mates once they are settled.  They also have a lot of extended family living in the area to enjoy and be loved by.

Huge thank you to their foster family who have now racked up 38 foster hounds in their time with us!  How amazing is that?  Thank you also to everyone who supported Dougal and Dolly and helped them find their forever home.

Dolly and Dougal

Dolly and Dougal arrived with me mid March.  They both settled in well , soon making friends with my reisdent basset and Lab.  Dolly and Dougal relied on each other very much in the early days, both watching the other and following each other into the garden or round the house; they are a little more independent now settled.

Both hounds were quite quiet on arrival but it soon became clear that Dougal does like the sound of his own voice and is quite a persistant barker, this is something I have been working on and his furever family must be prepared to continue to help him with this.  The most effective cure I have discovered is to keep him amused, with lots of walks, snuggles and attention.  Dougal actively seeks out attention and sofa snuggles, whereas whilst Dolly loves attention she does not demand it like Dougal does.  Dolly is just happy to go with the flow

Dolly and Dougal absolutely love playing in the garden playing zoomies and enjoy going out for walks, both walking well on the lead and happy to meet other dogs and people.  Dougal will pull on the lead if he sees wildlife he thinks is good for chasing – particularly rabbits  They travel well in the car, i encourage them to use the ramp, Dougal will put his paws up and wait to be utched in.  Neither hound shows food agression, I do feed them separate from my dogs as my basset could start a scrap if he has finished and the others havent!!  Dolly and Dougal are fed once a day in the eveing just before bed time, and after a trip into the garden settle well at night in the kitchen with my dogs.

Both Dolly and Dougal are clean in the house, during their stay with me there has not been one accident or any attempt from Dougal to “mark” in the house.  Both ask to go out by going to the back door and sitting on the mat.  They have been lovely house guests and have been happy to welcome visitors.

Due to Dougal’s love of his own voice we think a more rural area would be best for these two wonderful hounds.  Dougal does respond to quiet command, and will, when barking at the gate, walk incredibly slowly back to the house, dragging his feet and having a huff and a puff to himself.

Dougal’s incredibly high prey drive also means that no small furries or cats in the resident home.

They both love their walks so, a less built up area where they can enjoy and explore on their walks would be perfect.

Both have been left with the run of the downstairs of the house with the resident dogs for up to 4 hours.  This will need to be introduced slowly within their new home.

Blankets are a must for Dougal who loves to cover himself up totally to have a snooze.

Dolly is defiantly to more laid back of the two and is happy to watch the world go by and be a spectator in life.

Dougal and Dolly’s must haves:-

  • New human’s must be able to continue to work with Dougal’s barking
  • Probably a more rural area where Dougal’s barking can be worked on without fear of complaints and where they can both enjoy walks
  • No small furries including cats
  • If children in the home would suggest secondary school age
  • An active family
  • Someone who is home a lot in the early days whilst they settle in
  • Not to be left for more than 4 hours at a time
  • Can live with other resident dogs
  • Someone who is willing to be a slave to the demands of blankets, cuddles and sofa snuggles

Dougal and Dolly’s blog closes at 8pm on Monday 19th May 2025

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Dougal and Dolly are subject to an adoption fees and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including dogs will need to be able to travel to their foster home to meet them and their foster family.

You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Dougal and Dolly’s foster family, so that all of their history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of their needs, demands and requirements.

Both come with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.

Dougal and Dolly, as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life.

The recommended minimum adoption fee for Dougal and Dolly is £200.00

A Huge thank you to everyone who donated to Dougal and Dolly’s wish list.  They had a wonderful time opening their gifts.

They’ve had their health checks earlier this week and were both well behaved.

Apart from the usual, ears need a clean and teeth need some cleaning the vet wasn’t overly concerned with either.  Dolly was a little sensitive on her back when examined so a ramp will be needed to get in and out of the car, and no jumping on and off the sofa.

Dolly is coming out of her shell and begining to settle well.  Dougal is described as a single brain cell doofus – it is meant with love!

They are eating well and loving life.

Thank you again for all your donations to these lovely two.
