Ethel is looking for her forever home.
We hope that she will be in her forever home before her 7th birthday at the end of September.
As you will see Ethel has a slight underbite which does not cause her any issues. She is fed and watered using a high feeder which she finds more comfortable, and you will find less messy. She enjoys her food and is fed Lily Kitchen presently, which she enjoys any flavour. She has no known allergies to food, and enjoys a fishy treat.
Ethel is currently in foster with another basset and is not phased by having another hound around whilst she is eating; she does like to be first in the line for a treat however.
Ethel sleeps well at night on her own bed. Her foster dad does sleep in the same room as her, so please consider this when applying for Ethel if you have stairs, you may need to spend some time working with Ethel to get used to sleeping on her own.
Ethel has ignored the sofa and any stairs so we believe she is used to not being allowed on either due to her previous back surgery.
Ethel appears to be happy to be left alone with the resident basset, but can be a bit moany if foster dad goes out of sight but still in the house. When left she has had free run of the kitchen, hall and lounge and has been left for an hour. Obviously Ethel will need time to get used to her new surroundings and be confident in her new home before being left.
Ethel uses a ramp to get in and out of the car and is happy enough on car journeys.
Ethel loves her walks and meeting people and other dogs. She doesn’t flat basset when she decides she needs to wait to be swooned over, but will sit her butt down and refuse to move. Ethel is walked in a collar, she does have a harness and will walk in this too; Ethel does not like the collar coming up her head towards her ears.
When Ethel first came to us it was reported that she would have accidents in the home. Since she has been in foster there have been minimal accidents, mainly those you would expect whilst she was getting the lay of the land. Since then she will go to the back door and scratch or wait to be let out.
Every dog she meets she will try to play with, although does respect boundaries and has been friendly with all humans big and small. She can be overexcited in a friendly way.
Ethel is a bit of a scavenger on walks, so you do need to watch her that she’s not trying to snaffle something gross or that she shouldn’t.
Ethel previously lived with a cat, so we believe she will be happy living with a dog friendly cat. She has a friendly interest in squirrels but doesn’t try to chase them.
Ethel would love to have a playful dog in the house as well; obviously this will have to be monitored that it doesn’t get too rough due to her back surgery in 2024 (see below).
Before coming into our care, Ethel did have back surgery for a slipped disc. The surgery was completed in May 2024 and since then Ethel has not suffered any further issues. As detailed above, Ethel must be encouraged not to climb stairs, jump on and off furniture, or have an increase to her weight so as not to put any unnecessary pressure onto her back.
Ethel has had her vaccinations whilst in foster and these are not due again until June 2027.
Whilst in foster Ethel also had her anal glands expressed, minor surgery in having a lump removed and tested which all came back clear, reported to be a cyst which is unlikely to recur.
Ethel was a superstar at the vets.
Ethel has been deemed healthy and ready for her forever home.
Here’s what her foster dad has to say about her
Just an absolute angel. Loves everyone, happy and waggy when out and about but well behaved and responsive to the lead, stops and waits at curbs. The special thing about her is that she needs a good wipe down after she has eaten or drank. The underbite makes her especially dribbly so expect a soggy kitchen floor. She comes to get cleaned up (to a call of ‘dribbles’) and seems to enjoy it, even the ears.
She’s a little wary of hands around her head, back of the head and ears but just turns away for a neck scratch instead. She soon learns to trust you, but I tend to avoid scratching the area too much though
This is an amazing girl, she needs a playful friend at home, but would make a great family hound. Love to go out for walks and could probably manage further than Beryl and I can, even on 3 walks a day she still had some energy left for playing.

Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.

- Ethel is subject to an adoption fee of £350.00 and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family including all dogs will need to be able to travel to her foster home to meet Ethel and her foster family.
- You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Ethel’s foster family, so that all of her history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of her needs, demands and requirements.
- Ethel comes with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.

A month of loving Ethel!
Ethel has been a dream in foster, she adores her walks, is determined to get her foster sister to play, but is very polite about it and knows that foster sister is really not interested.
She has had a few minor “accidents” in the house in the first day or so, but being in a new environment, that isn’t unusual. She knows when she needs to go, and once she learnt where the outside is, she will indicate her desire, and has been clean in the house since shortly after her arrival.
Some minor signs of Separation Anxiety have been displayed, when foster dad is out of sight there are a few moans and whinges, but Ethel has been used to being with her original mum all the time. This has improved with time and she has been left with the resident hound without any issues for a short amount of time.
At her vet check, they did see a slight weakness in her right back leg, this doesn’t stop her having fun on her walks, and possibly with exercise will build back up. Her anal glands were done without any objection.
There was a lump spotted on her back, which the vet investigated , which removed removal as they were a little concerned about the biopsy results. We are pleased to say however, that the lump was nothing after all and Ethel has been given a clean bill of health.
Ethel does prefer to have her bowls elevated from the floor, we think she find drinking easier this way with her jaw formation.
Ethel knows she cannot jump up and down from the sofa because of her previous back surgery and she’s more than happy to be told no and settle down on a nest near you, or of course for you to join her in her nest.
She loves meeting her new friends in the pack for a walk and a play; she’s been very polite meeting all, humans big and small, other dogs, ignores the ducks and is generally a wonderful little girl. So incredibly well behaved and just lovely.
Ethel will be looking for her forever home when her 6 week assessment is up, she will definitely need a playful resident hound, no upsies onto furniture or stairs, a family who will be around her and love her the way she will love them.

It’s been busy weekend behind the scenes, Ethel was the third hound to join us, and not the last (more on them later!)
As with all hounds, Ethel is under assessment and is not currently looking for her forever home, so please no enquiries as they will not be responded to at this time
Ethel is 6 years old and has been through quite a bit in her life. Sadly due to her family’s own health they made the heart breaking decision that Ethel comes to us to find a new family. We know this was a very difficult decision, but the right decision for all.
In 2024 Ethel suffered a ruptured disc in her back which she underwent emergency surgery for and thankfully made a full recovery as you can see from the videos below. Ethel is very mobile and has a tail that just doesn’t stop wagging!
Ethel has poop accidents in the home, and has done all her life; possibly this is something to do with her back, possibly something else or just her thing.
Of course due to her back Ethel is not allowed to climb stairs or onto furniture; we have a wonderful foster dad who is happy to share a dog bed on the floor and is on one level so Ethel will always be involved and have company which she deserves.
Ethel has the most wonderful happy nature, everyone she’s met today has been greeted with a very waggy tail and cuddles.
Ethel’s face structure is a little different, she has her own unique way of drinking water, and nothing seems to cause her issues. As her original mum says “she’s truly a gorgeous soul” and everyone who has met her so far today would attest to that.
