Albus is currently living with 2 basset hounds and an elderly cat in foster. He discovered the other day that cats had claws when he was too playful with her – potentially Albus could live with a dog savvy cat.
Albus does not like sharing food, his bed, his people or his toys with other dogs, we believe Albus would be happy as an only dog or with another, confident dog who is willing to be patient with Albus. But do consider that Albus does not share so do not expect your resident hound to be snuggled up on a bed with Albus any time soon! It is not vital that there is a resident dog.
Albus does have issues with possessions and has air snapped (no bite) when he thinks someone or another hound is too close to his food, toys, bed or interfering with his human time. There are no obvious triggers, it just seems Albus doesn’t share! His foster family have been working with this by swapping, praise and making sure Albus is not set up to fail when swapping items. His forever home will need to be aware of this and have experience of this behaviour, although full rescue backup will be provided by ourselves to continue this positive reinforcement training with his new family.
Albus eats in a separate room to his foster siblings, he eats very slowly and loves his food; cheese is the top of the list, as well as carrots and there doesn’t appear to be a dog treat he doesn’t enjoy.
Albus is very much a lady’s dog, he adores his foster human teenager and when she’s home he is never far away from her.
Albus enjoys car rides and happily goes up his ramp into either the boot or secured back seat of the car. He loves his walks and is walked in a collar and lead.He is very polite when walking with no pulling. He does however have the typical recall of a basset unless there is a treat involved. He has met livestock when out and about with no issues. When out and about he just wants to be friends with everyone!
Albus is very clean in the house, even coming into a new home with two bitches he didn’t try to scent mark. When Albus needs out he will go to the door and wait for this to be opened.
Albus has been left with other dogs in the house with free roam of downstairs for 4 hours with no issues, and has been left on his own for 2 hours with no issues. Albus doesn’t attempt to get on the furniture, and sleeps downstairs with the resident hounds. He can climb the stairs but has only attempted to a few times.
Albus was happy enough at the vets until the nail clippers came out, which he greeted with a “smile”.A muzzle has been used whilst clipping his nails.
Albus will “sit” and “wait” for his food and will produce his paw when asked “paw”
Albus loves to play and will bring a favourite toy, his avocado, to you, not so keen to hand it over but loves a zoomies chase around the garden. He is affectionate, always pleased to see anyone and gives the best welcome home greetings.
Due to previous issues with small children in the house we will not consider a home with children under secondary school age.
Finally, there is nothing he loves more than to have his chest rubbed and if there is an available and willing foot or hand he will rub against it.
Albus needs someone who is at home more often than not and prepared to put in the time to help him settle and learn further
- Someone who is willing to work with Albus and be patient whilst he gets to know you and his new home
- Potentially can live with a confident, understanding dog, but would be just as happy as an only dog with play dates.
- No small furries, but potentially a dog savvy cat.
- Albus loves a walk, and needs physical and mental stimulation.
- Albus will need continued positive reinforcement training when in the situation when he believes you are taking things away from him or in his vicinity. We are happy to provide assistance in this area.
- Patience and time to spend with Albus in the crucial first few weeks as he adapts
- If there are children in the home they will need to be over secondary school age
- Applications close on the 13th August 2022 at 8pm.
Taking on a rescue dog is not the easy option. You need to be prepared to help a confused and troubled hound find their place in your family. They have been through a massive upheaval and will need time to settle into a new way of life, so please consider this BEFORE you fill in an application.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Albus is subject to an adoption fee and a successful home check. If your home check is successful, your family will need to be able to travel to his foster home to meet him and his foster family.
You will also have a telephone call with a member of the team, plus Albus’ foster family, so that all of his history can be shared with you in person, and that we can be assured that you can fill all of his needs and requirements.
Albus comes with 5 weeks free insurance via our rehoming partner, Agria.
Albus as with all of our hounds will have full rescue back up for life.
