Evelyn Walker's For the Love of Bassets Estate Sale

Evelyn Walker, 1940-2023

Evelyn spent her life in and around Workington, Cumbria.

She was married, had two human children, and many furry ones!

Like many, she could be stubborn and didn't need to say a word to let anyone know she wasn't happy or disagreed with them – a look (glower) made her feelings clear. Fiercely independent, although she was only 5 ft tall, she had at least 6 ft of character!

Evelyn's Basset Hound Journey started in 1970, when the family purchased Fred. Her son, then aged 7, loved the Fred Basset cartoons and Fred was bought as a surprise, after a long hospitalisation. From then until suffering a stroke in 2018, Evelyn was never without a basset.

After her husband died in 1991, Evelyn met Sylvia Mitchell (Rakefoot Breeding Kennels) and they became good friends, going to dog shows, social events and on cruises together. Her dogs won a stack of rosettes and certificates at various shows, including Crufts and she also became an active member of several Basset Hound Clubs,

After her stroke, she was unable to look after her animals, and they had to be rehomed. She missed them every day, but knew it was in their best interests, even if she wasn't happy about it!

Evelyn made regular donations to charities, including Dogs Trust UK, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

She wanted what she cared about in life to benefit after her death. Evelyn asked her daughter Carolyn to make sure all of her basset bits would go to basset lovers and any money that was raised would go to a dogs charity.

Carolyn said: "By donating them to BRNGB, I think her brief has been met! I'm sure she would love to know that the items she collected are being sold and the money used to support Bassets Hounds in need."

We are honoured that Evelyn's family thought of us and we can continue with Evelyn's love of the breed by raising funds to save more Bassets in our care, current and future.

We have a wonderful team who worked hard to learn about the items and set reasonable, market-reflective prices. A facebook page has been set up (link below) More items will be added weekly as things sell.

Thank you for taking a look. A few of the items already for your viewing:

They do a good job of saving these hounds and finding special homes for life. They also work hard to raise money to pay for any vet bills.

We have the privilege of adopting Dylan. The whole process was seamless and very reassuring that they cover all bases, both in relation to vetting us and also in the assessment of the hound
